New Faces – Listen Up!

A New Face in Campus? Listen Up.

Bullying is an inevitbale thing, especially in an environment where angry, hormone-driven teenagers with different upbringing, personalities and disposition are together inside the four walls of a school. There is a distubring rate of 80% students who get bullied at least 3 times a month in schools all over the United States and more often than not, victims of this social problem suffer some sort of emotional trauma after being victimized.

Among those who suffer a lot from school bullying are the new faces in campus. The new kid. The one who just moved in from another state or country. According to psychological studies, new students fall prey to bullying because, first and foremost, bullies like them to know who’s the “boss” in the campus. Bullies like to think they are dominating over a place or a person. It is a result of personal insecurities, fears and issues on the part of the bully.

A classic example of school bullying gone very wrong is the case of Samantha and Michaela Kendall. They were twin sisters who were taunted and teased at school for being fat. Being bullied was a catalyst for these girls to develop Anorexia Nervosa, a fatal eating disorder. They spent years and years eating tiny slivers of bread everyday for fear of becoming fat which ultimately lead to their deaths - Michaela in 1994, and Samantha in 1997.

As for the new faces, you need not be scared. Remember that deep down inside those knuckles inches away from your face is a scared little boy, just trying to hide his own insecurities by making you feel bad. Should any form of harassment take place – whether to you or to your schoolmate, do not hesitate to report it immediately and discreetly to anyone with authoritative power – your principal, your teacher or your parents. Bullying is an unacceptable issue that must be addressed promptly and properly.
