Modeling Jobs – Signs of A Modeling Scam

Good modeling jobs are so hard to find when you don’t have previous modeling experience. There are so many young, beautiful, talented, aspiring models out there, hoping to break out into the modeling industry but don’t know where or how to begin. And most of these aspiring models ignore tiny, little signs that they are being scammed just to chase their dream.

You should know that just because someone presents you a business card saying he’s a modeling agent, doesn’t mean he could actually give you legit modeling jobs. To help you sort out the real ones from the fake, here are 2 of some well-known modus operandi of modeling scam artists:

1. UPFRONT FEE

This is the most obvious sign of all. It practically screams “modeling scam!” in an ear-splitting volume. A scammer would most likely ask you to pay some sort of fee before getting you booked or before signing a contract. Others would ask you to pay a couple hundred bucks so that they can make you a comp card.

Remember that legitimate modeling agencies actually never ask you for any kind of upfront fee. Modeling agencies often only take 10% of your earnings after you get paid from modeling jobs, so to pay before actually doing any kind of modeling?... Totally scam-potential.

2. PHOTOSHOOT THEN YOU GET REPRESENTED!

There are some reports of scammers pretending to be professional photographers who are looking for aspiring models.

It goes like this, the “photographer” chooses 10 to 15 girls for a day dedicated to fashion photography and then afterwards, he chooses the best picture of the bunch and viola! The model in the photo is off to the big city to start a fabulous modeling life.

Again, this is a scam tapping you on the shoulder. No professional and sane photographer would agree to shoot 15 girls in one day! He will never get good pictures if he does that and trust me; photographers know that it is unethical, tiring and impossible. What’s more – it is agents who would most likely scout for models and not photographers.

It’s great if you get modeling jobs right from the moment you get out there and look for them but be very careful about the people who offer them to you or agency you’re going to. The world isn’t all bright and fabulous like those modeling dreams of yours, you know.http://www.newfaces.com/castingcalls-auditions.php

Teen Models, Adolescence and Plastic Surgery

Adolescence is a time where a person is mostly very idealistic – sometimes to the point of being unrealistic - about himself/herself. And in a world where stick-thin teen models dressed like goddesses are being worshipped by the general adolescent population, the average teenager could hardly be blamed for wanting to change some part of his/her self by getting a plastic surgery.

According to Erik Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development, adolescence is a combination or synthesis of a person’s childhood and an introduction to or anticipation of the role he must play in adulthood. It often results to a role confusion or identity crisis, which then pushes teens to look for their identities in other people.

This makes average teens very easily influenced by movies, TV shows and glossy magazines. Coming up with unrealistic and ridiculous ideas of what they should be or what they should look like only magnifies when they see people their age in these shows and magazines.

Ignoring the fact that these picture-perfect teen models and actresses had to go through hours of
professional make-up before being photographed (not to mention the number of hours of professional photo editing), the average teenage girl who is in the middle of an identity crisis would think that looking exactly like these teen models can make her as someone who fits with society’s standards. But when she looks at herself and realizes that a part of her face or body doesn’t fit with the standards, she often looks for solutions, things to make herself fit in. And what better and permanent quick fix than to get a plastic surgery?

About 244,000 cosmetic surgeries were done on teens from 2000 to 2006 (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons). The most popular procedures are the rhinoplasty (nose lift) and mammaplasty (breast augmentation).

Most of these surgeries were done on graduation season – which makes us think that today’s graduation gifts are not anymore confined to getting a first car or a plane ticket to Paris.

Teens are often unaware of how dangerous these surgeries can be. Hundreds and hundreds of lives have been lost to cosmetic surgeries caused by medical malpractices and even suicide (due to being psychologically unprepared of the sudden changes in their body).

Needless to say, teens (and parents) who are willing to spend thousands on plastic surgeries are often those who feel insecure about themselves and their children. But then again, when you’re living in a superficial society and surrounded with billboards of impossibly beautiful actresses and teen models ... who wouldn’t feel insecure in one way or another?

So who’s to blame about the obviously damaging and potentially lethal level of insecurity that teens feel nowadays? Is it the media? The society? The home these teens grew up in?... To that, we know no definite answer.

Male Models Agency – Preparing for A Go-See

The modeling industry today is not as narrow as it was before. Nowadays, everyone can model – tall girls, petite girls, plus-size girls, old people, babies and even the male population have taken over the world of modeling – Google “male models agency” and you’ll find thousands of them!

To become a model, people would have to go to go-sees. A go-see is an opportunity for models or aspiring models to be represented by a modeling agency or be booked for projects. A model can only have a few moments to impress agents during go-sees so it’s very important to prepare for them.

1. Sleep Well, Drink More

Having a clear complexion is important for a model because it usually tells agents how naturally good-looking you are without make up. Let’s face it – male models can’t wear as much make-up as female models can. At least 8 glasses of water and at least 8 hours of sleep can help give your skin a youthful glow. The average male adult is required to sleep at least 8 hours. Some people can get by with 7 hours or 6, but having full 8 hours of sleep usually results to better condition of your skin. Plus, it helps you think better the day after – good-looking and witty? I doubt any male models agency would turn you down.

2. Portfolio, Portfolio, Portfolio

Forgot your portfolio? Then forget being booked. A portfolio shows agents the range of your modeling skills, the things you can do and the different looks that you can rock. It is a determinant as to whether or not you are right for their agency or project and if you don’t have it with you during a go-see, chances are, they will never book you. Prepare your portfolio the night before – put it inside your bag or car so you won’t forget it.

3. Clothes to Wear

Initially, agents want to see you in your most basic and natural look. So no, you don’t need to wear a tuxedo. Just a clean white shirt and jeans would be fine. Choose those that are form-fitting and flattering.

Every male models agency has its own standards when it comes to models that they represent. To broaden your chances of getting represented, do some research. Find out which agencies take male models your size, height, look, ethnicity and more. With any luck, you’d be nailing go-sees sooner than you expect.

Casting Calls 101

Casting calls are just about one of the most important things in a singer, model or actor’s career. It is the first step they take towards becoming a significant part of their chosen industry.

Casting calls or auditions are usually not open to the general public and negotiations for an actor to get in a casting call are usually done between casting agents. An actor could also find out about casting calls from ads on TV or Print Media but these are usually what people call “cattle calls” or casting calls for non-speaking acting parts in a movie, commercial or TV episode. Getting in mailing lists could be one way of finding out if any agency is having a casting call but this usually requires an actor to be a member of an actors’ guild of some sort.

If you are planning to venture into the world of acting or performing you must know that casting calls are unavoidable – you will go through it several times in this kind of career. The following are a couple of things you must know when attending a casting call :

1. Dress for the part – If you’re auditioning for the part of the mad scientist who will kidnap the superhero’s love interest, then look like it! When auditioning for certain characters, you will need to convince casting directors that you are fit to play the role – by showing and not telling them.

2. Do not over-act – Sometimes during casting calls, you will be required to say some lines or perform a monologue. Remember to cook it up well, meaning, act the scene out just right. If the script requires you to exude silent grief, don’t roll on the floor and wail in tears! There’s no “silent” grief in that.

3. If you’re auditioning for a play or musical, prepare a song piece. Casting directors may require you to sing in acapella so make sure you get enough sleep the night before your audition. Skip the party and sleep early! Also, prepare an instrumental CD of your chosen audition piece. You never know, some casting directors may require you to sing with musical accompaniment.

4. If you’re auditioning for a Reality TV Show, that’s the time when you can ditch the Superman outfit and just be yourself. But take note – reality show casting directors want people with unique personalities or lifestyles.

And lastly, exude confidence! There’s nothing more eye-catching than a person who lights up the room with a confident and genuine smile on his/her face.

New Faces Skyrockets Model and Actor Careers

Modeling and acting are two of the toughest yet truly exciting jobs in this world. And once you have established a name in the modeling or entertainment industry, the world could be yours for the taking.

It’s no wonder why so many people dream of becoming a model or an actor. And it’s definitely no mystery why model and actor portfolio sites have popped up everywhere. Talent online portfolio sites did not just grow on trees, though, metaphorically speaking. It all started with one particular website.

The very first (and most respected) model and actor portfolio service in the history of the worldwide web is New Faces. New Faces literally started it all – in 1995, supermodel Hilary Rowland (one of today’s hottest female CEOs), launched New Faces. Hilary taught herself HTML and web design and had gone through many trial and error phases. When she finally got the website done at the age of 15, she launched the very first online portfolio service in the world. It is a website where models and actors can create their own portfolios for free and where they can get booked, apply to casting calls or hired by talent scouts.

New Faces helps aspiring models and actors to get discovered by talent or modeling agencies. For more than 15 years, this site has been used by the most noteworthy photographers, agents and casting directors. These professionals aren’t in New Faces for nothing – they’re there to look for new models/talents by browsing through members’ portfolios.

New Faces – Listen Up!

A New Face in Campus? Listen Up.

Bullying is an inevitbale thing, especially in an environment where angry, hormone-driven teenagers with different upbringing, personalities and disposition are together inside the four walls of a school. There is a distubring rate of 80% students who get bullied at least 3 times a month in schools all over the United States and more often than not, victims of this social problem suffer some sort of emotional trauma after being victimized.

Among those who suffer a lot from school bullying are the new faces in campus. The new kid. The one who just moved in from another state or country. According to psychological studies, new students fall prey to bullying because, first and foremost, bullies like them to know who’s the “boss” in the campus. Bullies like to think they are dominating over a place or a person. It is a result of personal insecurities, fears and issues on the part of the bully.

A classic example of school bullying gone very wrong is the case of Samantha and Michaela Kendall. They were twin sisters who were taunted and teased at school for being fat. Being bullied was a catalyst for these girls to develop Anorexia Nervosa, a fatal eating disorder. They spent years and years eating tiny slivers of bread everyday for fear of becoming fat which ultimately lead to their deaths - Michaela in 1994, and Samantha in 1997.

As for the new faces, you need not be scared. Remember that deep down inside those knuckles inches away from your face is a scared little boy, just trying to hide his own insecurities by making you feel bad. Should any form of harassment take place – whether to you or to your schoolmate, do not hesitate to report it immediately and discreetly to anyone with authoritative power – your principal, your teacher or your parents. Bullying is an unacceptable issue that must be addressed promptly and properly.

Top Models Know These Health & Beauty Tricks

No normal, straight girl would deny that once in their life, they turned green with envy watching those tall, skinny, picture-perfect mannequins on America’s Next Top Model. Well, not all of us can become models but in one way or another, we can always fool other people into thinking we are with these beauty tricks. (*Winks.)

1. For dark eyebags.

The best models in this world all have this in common – expressive eyes. And dark circles under your peepers will not help you achieve those model-like smiling eyes.

Try placing a bag of green tea over your eyelids or applying eye cream. This helps cool the eye and reduces under-eye skin discoloration. The best solution to this problem however is this: Sleep.

2. For pimples.

Top Models also suffer the same things you do, such as pimples. But they know a lot of quick fix solutions to get rid of zits overnight. They have one word for you: toothpaste.

Gone are the days when creamy, white paste was used solely for teeth. Today, toothpaste is also being used on zits. White toothpaste ingredients can dry up skin, clearing up pimples. Dab it for no more than 15 minutes, though, you don’t want to have pimple marks, do you?

3. For a slimmer body.

Top Models know that a slower metabolism means more chances of fat build-up, while faster metabolism means a sexier shape. Fiber-rich foods help flush away toxins from your body. Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and beans. Breakfast also helps jump-start your metabolism and prevents you from over-eating during the day.

Follow these tips and tricks and there will be no more reason for you to envy those top models on TV. (*Winks again.)
